Nevada and Nebraska among many to recognize Hydrocephalus Month
With only a formal enrollment in the state legislature and a swift signature from Governor Jim Gibbons, Nevada will soon join a lengthening list of states who recognize May as Dandy-Walker Syndrome and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month, and on May 13, Governor Dave Heineman of Nebraska will formally declare its state as one with the same awareness month.
Nevada Senate Concurrent Resolution 31 (read the PDF version here) officially designates May as a particularly important month to spread awareness and help fight the potentially-debilitating conditions of hydrocephalus and Dandy-Walker Syndrome, another brain disorder that affects around 1 in 25,000 births.
The bill reads, “Whereas, all Americans should learn about Dandy-Walker Syndrome and hydrocephalus and and recognize the achievements of all Americans with disabilities, the important role that they have played throughout the entire history of the United States…the members of the Legislature recognize the month of May as Dandy-Walker Syndrome and Hydrocephalus Awareness Month.”
With Governor Heineman’s address tomorrow (check his schedule here) and Governor Gibbons’s expected signature, Nebraska and Nevada will be matching states like Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, and Mississippi who have already issued similar proclamations. Representing a new national surge in attention to the brain conditions, declarations like these stand as a leap in activism for people who suffer from and survive through life’s challenges.
