Students walk to raise awareness of hydrocephalus

Justin Walker can barely say the word “hydrocephalus.” But the 5-year-old kindergarten student at Helen Wilcox School in Chico, CA knows all too well the meaning of the word.

Walker was diagnosed with hydrocephalus when he was just a few weeks old. The disease causes an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, requiring those that have the disease to wear a shunt in their head to drain the fluid.

“We had heard of hydrocephalus before he was diagnosed, but didn’t know anything about it,” said Jodi Lawrence, Justin’s grandmother.

But through the help of Lawrence and Helen Wilcox school, more than 600 elementary school students now know a little more about the trials their schoolmate has endured. Read full story:
